Summary of Baggage Policy

Always review Terms and Conditions of Travel for compatibility with any connecting carrier.

  • One small bag as carry-on is permitted and must fit in the overhead compartment. Laptops, all other electronic devices, and all prescription medication are not to be stowed under the coach but must be brought inside the coach with the passenger.
  • Baggage must not exceed sixty-two (62) inches when adding outside dimensions together (Length+Width+Height).
  • Two pieces of baggage up to fifty (50) pounds each per adult passenger and one piece of baggage per fare paying child passengers are permitted under the coach.
  • Acceptable baggage includes suitcases, duffel bags, toolboxes, trunks and securely tied cardboard boxes. A plastic bag, trash bag and/or paper bag are not acceptable as baggage.
  • All baggage must be tagged with name and phone number identification.
  • When space is available, Bicycles that are boxed or in a canvas bag may be stowed under the coach.
  • Passengers should keep their personal belongings, especially valuables such as purses, wallets, cell phones, tablets, laptops and medications in their possession at all times including rest stops.
  • Passengers are responsible for transferring their own baggage from one coach to another during a transfer.
  • Passengers are responsible for claiming all baggage promptly at their final destination.
  • Passengers may not leave bags unattended at any time when on the bus, in the terminal or at the gate area.
  • We will not transport personal property, baggage or items unless the owner of the personal property has purchased a ticket and is travelling on the same coach as the baggage.
  • Trailways of New York is not responsible for baggage that is left behind aboard the coach or baggage that is unclaimed by passengers.
Trailways of New York does not check bags over its routes. All baggage / items brought onto the coach or stowed under the coach are the sole responsibility of the passenger. Trailways of New York is not liable for any lost, stolen or damaged personal belongings.

The operating carrier and terminal operators retain the right to open and inspect both stowed and carry-on baggage, at their discretion.

Prohibited Items

The following items are prohibited from all baggage (both carry-on and baggage stored in the bus baggage compartment):
  • Acids
  • Alcoholic beverages (liquor, beer, ale, wine, etc.)
  • Ammunition
  • Animals, pets, emotional support animals (Service Animals only are permitted by law)
  • Articles exceeding baggage size limitations
  • Backpacks, baggage or other items with attached or protruding articles
  • Batteries containing liquid acids
  • Combustible liquids
  • Corpses or ashes of cremated corpses
  • Cylinders containing compressed gases (Exception: Traveling with oxygen and respirators)
  • Explosives
  • Films – flammable
  • Firearms, all types
  • Fireworks
  • Flammable items
  • Furniture
  • Gases
  • Hazardous (dangerous) articles
  • Live fish, poultry, reptiles
  • Matches, strike-anywhere
  • Materials that have a disagreeable odor
  • Merchandise for resale (except sample baggage)
  • Phonograph records
  • Poisons
  • Radioactive materials
  • Television sets
  • Trash Bags
  • Weapons (includes toy and replica weapons)
Carrier has no responsibility and assumes no liability for damage, breakage, deterioration, delay, and/or loss, of any kind caused by any prohibited item.
The following additional items are prohibited from baggage stowed in the bus baggage compartments – these items should only be stored in carry-on baggage:
  • Cellphones & smartwatches
  • Jewelry and Heirlooms
  • Laptop Computers, Tablets and Personal Electronic Devices
  • Money and negotiable instruments
  • Passports
  • Perishable items, including foodstuffs
  • Prescription medication must be kept in passenger’s possession at all times.
  • Passengers are welcome to board the vehicle with devices such as CPAP machines as a complimentary addition to their free carry-on item.

NOTE: Passengers, who for medical reasons, must rely on and use oxygen in portable oxygen containers, may carry these containers with them on the bus.
